Working out outside - cold weather!

Brrrr. It's damn cold here now and getting up for a morning run is just not happening in this weather.

Anyone have any good suggestions for cold weather gear? I'm looking at some Under Armour stuff but am not sure how good it is.

I don't want to layer up to insanity and sacrifice the workout. If I'm getting up early to run it had better be worth it!

Get outta Canada would be my first advice. Dress in layers is my second. I lived in Utah for about 5 years and found that thermals or underarmour did help but it seems to be better to have a little "airspace" between you and the first layer. Something baggy or flannel first, then a windproof and insulated outer.

That strategy is tough if your doing heavy exercising though, the bunchy material, well, bunches, and then gets soaked in sweat which makes you colder.

Do you live close to a gym?

Werd. (Mind you, Florida cold isn't the same as Canada cold, but still, UA cold gear is the SHIT... the knockoff stuff works alright, but nothing works quite like the real deal).

I don't like to make unnecessary trips in my car and I hate showering at the gym. So I'd have to drive 15 minutes into town for the gym...then 15 minutes back home for the shower/get ready thing....then another 40 back into town for work. Seems unnecessary for me when I could run outside.

Plus...I kind of like working out outside.

I am kinda the same way. I have a weight machine at home and hate tread mills so its off to the park for my jog (I jog there, jog, and jog home). Of course it is always temperate here and I can dive into the creek if I have to shower! That is my biggest problem with working out though. I hate missing the time it takes me to change and shower. I mean I can get a good work out in an hour, but then I have to clean up and primp and who has time for a missing 3 hours per night

After five years on North Dakota I really feel your pain. I'd try to find an indoor track, but if that doesn't work get some underarmor gear and wear something windproof over it. You want your innermost layer to be a breathable synthetic material with a very small amount of airspace between it and your skin. Then an outer layer should have airspace between it and the inner layer and be breatheable but windproof, and snug at the ankles, neck and wrists. You'll have to work pretty hard to keep warm but you'll get a hell of a workout.

It's all mental! Tell yourself it could be worse, this guy is a friend of mine, at work, and he's the main reason I am a salvage diver in FL, and NOT up north! (They're recovering an ATV that fell through the ice)
