I've never even heard of life sentences for anything other than murder or maybe multiple rapes.

I wonder if it is most common when a juvenile is being tried as an adult and has screwed up enough to be subject to habitual offender/three strikes statutes? Specifically that may apply to the case outlined in this quote from the article:

"The court ruled in the case of Terrance Graham, who was implicated in armed robberies when he was 16 and 17. Graham, now 23, is in prison in Florida, which holds 60 percent of juvenile defendants who are locked up for life for crimes other than homicide."
