A lot of insurance people say that the highest rates for motorcycles are from Harley Davidson riders (Specifically Harley and not just cruisers). A lot of crashes from what I understand. Or basically midlife crising men who haven't ridden a bicycle in 30years much less a 700lb motorcycle wiht crap loads of torque. Those don't seem to mix well.

Now my bike may be ugly and not as fast as your newer 600s (Though I don't seem to have trouble in the twisties, even taking on the 1000s). But damn I love not having to make payments on the bike or insurance. And everytime I'm thinking about buying a newer bike. I ride it and remember for the same monthly payments I could ride to California and back each month.

My bikes aren't in popularity contests or bike shows. They both get ridden, and hard. It's just amazing that insurance for my 700+ lb 2006 VTX is 1/3 that of my sub-500 lb 2001 RC51. But your point is another reason why I don't like Harleys. IMO the base price is way too high, and all because of the name.

Are those online quotes?
If so, actually call the company. Online quotes are always considerably higher than the actual cost.
Further, make sure you give the agent your actual VIN when you get the quote. Just using a generic bike model will give you a higher quote than using a specific vin. Don't ask me why, but that's been the case every time I've ever checked.
