Had a buddy, years back, who was the same way. Bodybuilder. Martial arts guy. Wasn't afraid of anything, except pits. When he was a kid he'd had a pit come up to him and, without so much as a growl, latched onto his inner thigh next to his balls and wouldn't let go, until someone had beaten it senseless with a bat. According to his family members who were there, at the time, there was absolutely no provocation.
It's not an irrational fear, once you've been through something like that.
