I stand by two things I said in this thread though.

If he did spend a weekend or a week's course with this kid, as his MSF instructor, I would take his opinion of what kind of bike he would be ok on over a bunch of strangers debating it on a forum.

Also, I think in a lot of cases, a 12r IS probably more forgiving than a more modern 600, which is a lot lighter, a lot more high strung, with a shorter wheelbase, as well as a more aggressive rake and trail, brakes that bite a lot more, etc etc.
