I know that in NC, for a cage, if the extent of damage is equal to, or over 75% of the worth (according to the DMV) the vehicle is considered salvaged. You can either take a setlement and keep the vehicle or let them take it and they will give you a different number for a settlement.
My '94 Prism got rear ended in a parking lot and caused about....nothing really....$1500 in damage. (nice having a body shop at the dealership where you work at ) They considered the vehicle a total loss and gave me $1300 and I got to keep the ride. I had just bought it in Nov. of last year and gave $1800 for it. I fixed all the damage myself and came out WAAAAAY ahead of the game and have a salvaged title to show for it. I could give a damn!
