Well here's a twist.
 The basic principle still applies...flagpoles are not approved by the HOA BUT it is NOT a condo/townhome and it IS his property. It is a single family home and it is in HIS front yard. It is NOT a common area as previously thought. The HOA is still within their rights here...bottom line.  I do wish they would just let him keep his flagpole. I served 4 1/2 years with the US Marine Corps and I do love the flag and my country BUT when you move in to a neighborhood governed by an HOA...you are obligated to follow the rules. How could the HOA be so stupid. Did they not think word of this would spread?
