Many parts shops will use brake cleaner as a general parts cleaner. In fact, the guy who owns the local GMD Computrack uses brake cleaner to clean all the parts of forks/shocks when he does a rebuild/oil/seals. You sure you're not thinking of brake FLUID??? Brake cleaner isn't corrosive like that...

i used brake cleaner to pull all of the paint off of my rim so i now have a polished lip on my front rim
