All indications are we are going to hear the President propose "solutions" tomorrow, some of which are ridiculously extreme while still managing to be demonstrably ineffective. I find a petition effectively no-one believes will be taken seriously, no matter how many signatures it gets, to be a pretty measured response.

On a side note I also don't mind that people are demonstrating what the petition site really is, a silly way for the government to pretend they are listening to citizens without actually having to do anything.

Apparently the White House does too. Responding to petitions that receive 25,000 signatures in 30 days must have become onerous, they raised the threshold for a required response to 100,000 signatures in the same 30 days.
