The favorite theory is the one AMJ alluded to, that he was desperate to erase all trace of resemblance to his father.
 What I've never understood is how he ended up with bad surgeries considering the amount of money he had. If he had actually wanted to look like a "white woman", like some people stupidly propose, he certainly had the resources to achieve his goal.
