When i had a appt in newark, we prolly had people feeding off of us for half a year or more. We ended up finding out that these girls were leeching off of us by my roommates ipod software. Her name kept popping up in the ipod shared section.

It is stealing. "They're using an unsecured network" is about as good an excuse as "they left the door unlocked."

But you probably have a right to free internet too.

I think you're suppopsed to pay for it instead of stealing it.

It's a commandment thing.

Wow, I guess I should have been more clear in the post you quoted. The house I'm working on is MY house. I bought the house, so yes, I have a right to the wiring.

And as for the internet, rather than the door being unlocked, it's more like the door is unlocked and they have a sign out that says, "my stuff is free for you to use, just as long as I still have complete access to it also."

Is it really petty theft in your eyes? They're broadcasting a connection. It's like McDonald's, or some coffee shop wifi. It's just out there, being broadcast for everyone within a certain radius.

Yeah, but McCallister's and Starbucks offers it specifically for you to use gratis to draw in customers. These people pay for it for their own personal and expect it to be that way. Why not tap off of their cable TV or water line too? Do what you want but if I find out you're tapping off mine you will seriously have a laptop shaped paperweight. You can easily obtain programs that will slag your hard drive, CPU, RAM, and wireless RT. Seriously, this shit's easy to get all I do is call a guy and you're out your laptop.

Coffee shops with WiFi undoubtedly know the risk they are assuming in non-patrons of their establishment using their service. I imagine they take some measures to limit their exposure. And patrons are paying for coffee, etc, and in exchange get to use the internet.

This to me is no different than stealing cable by running a line to your house from the source. Your neighbors might be naieve to assume their bandwidth won't be used if they don't secure their network, but that doesn't mean they deserve to pay for your internet usage.

Does your neighbor advertise a free connection for anyone that wants it, like McDonalds does?

Are you offering your neighbor some sort of compensation for the loss in connection speed that was mentioned previously?

If not, then yes it's theft.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors isp connection. (It's on page 83)

FYI in Florida that can be punished as a felony. Don't know about your state.

My laptop will sometimes connect to one of my neighbors. I hate it when it happens because its slow as hell. Thats how I know I'm not connected to mine. It only happened once in the last month or so.

I have checked sports scores at my sisters place with my laptop when some is on her computer. Mine was unsecured for a while. If there was a way I could set it up so someone could use it and not screw with my shit I wouldn't really care.

I was on one day and then a box popped up letting me know someone connected to my network. I left it alone for about 5 minutes or so then worried they would screw with shit so I gave them the boot.
