They have been using radio tags on clothes in walmart up here for years now. Odd.
Sales clerk has to remove it, or an alarm sounds when you pass through the door.

Not the same thing...this is RFID, not just an induction coil alarm (what you're talking about). The induction coil in an RFID is active, not passive, and contains data.

Haven't RFID's been in use for years now?
I remember the "Big-brother" fear mongerers screaming about this when I was in grade school. Aren't those little plastic bars stuck on most big-box-store inventory RFID devices?

No, they are resonant coil (or in this case, reed) passive systems.
