No office job I've come across starts with 3 weeks, but I'm not saying they don't exist.

My corporate experience is limited to the auto finance industry, but its usually 1.5-2 weeks to start plus 3 "sick" days.

I started with 17 days of vacation and 5 days of sick. But I get paid shit.

Every company is different, especially with sick time.

I'd say that the "average" white-collar job starts with 1-2 weeks paid vacay and will increase every few years.

Ironically, many of the Boomers that are so dedicated to the job have accumulated somewhere between 4-6 weeks of paid vacation per year.

never had an office job so I cant say but even at ups we had 2 weeks vacation time to start and a total of 11 sick/personal days so it wasnt all that bad.

Plus right out of the gate whos going to give a new hire 4 plus weeks esp if they have no expierence.

Most of these construction guys I work with dont even get sick days, they dont work they dont get paid (granted they have some crazy hourly rates they get paid)

I have found that those who feel that they work their ass off into the ground are usually not all that great at what they do.

Most jobs up here start with 3. I started with 3 weeks here and on my first day of employment had 4 floating holidays, 3 personal business days, and 1 volunteer day to use at my discretion (renewed every January 1st). So really, more like 4.5 weeks.

We don't have to use personal business or vacation hours for sick time either, there's another bucket of sick time with 80 hours per year in it to use.

Yep. It's about working smarter not harder a lot of the time.

I think in North America we're so backwards about this stuff. Employees are more productive (isn't that what most companies want?) when they have a better work life balance.

If you think you don't get enough vacation time, maybe it's because your employer isn't under any kind of pressure to give it to you. Why should they, the average here is only 2 wks/yr. You want more, then either:

A) grow some nuts and negotiate better during your interview,
B) move into a different field/industry where the benefits are better,
C) or move to Germany or some place like that where they get a lot more.
