Wow. I doubt it is as bad in Canada as it is here, but I would think real estate probably isn't doing so great up there either. Adding a 13% tax doesn't strike me as a way to improve it.

The only provinces that are losing value are North West Territories and Prince Edward island. http://www.crea.ca/public/news_stats/statistics.htm

I paid 8.25% sales tax but I think that a portion of that was a Harris Country or city of Houston tax.
And you are totally right about the sales tax in most provinces.. which I why I never shop when I go anywhere. I paid 4x the tax on my house in Texas than I do for my house here which is valued at double my house down there.. OUCH. ( mind you I got 1/3rd of the house for double the money, so... hmmm) But I do like that I make and take home a lot more, but teachers in the states are wayyy underpaid! ( threadjack) |

8.25% is the state max. The additional 2% was from the local county/city/etc. I'm glad to hear that teachers up there are compensated more reasonably. I wish it was true here.

I looked up sales tax by state, and using complicated arithmetic it seems like we pay on average about 10-11 percent more with sales tax factored in.

That doesn't tell the whole story either. Most states also have a state income tax which can vary wildly. Some cities (like New York) also have an income tax. Factor in sales taxes, property taxes, fuel taxes, alcohol and tobacco taxes, etc. and it effectively becomes incalculable.

Example: Worker X earns $100k per year and spends $10k per year in taxable goods and services (if applicable). His after-tax buying power is: NYC Atlanta Houston Toronto London Tokyo etc.
