With .40 & .45, the last thing you want is one that isn't comfortable to shoot.
For real. I shot a Glock 27 and I thought the fucking thing was going to launch out of my hand every time I shot it. The extended clip would have probably helped, but the same thing was too small for me to be comfortable shooting.

Me too. I like the XD's, but when I went to the gun show and started holding all the different models, two felt right... on perfect and the other close. If I had the cheddah, I would have bought that Ruger (which model escapes me), but I didn't... so I ended up with my S&M M&P .40. I love it.

I would recommend a gun show... even if not buying at the time, you get to hold a wide variety of guns which goes a long way in determining what you want to get.

I plan on going there before buying anything, but wanted to get some ideas on what are decent pistols to get. Good advice so far, keep it rolling.
Definitely go rent and shoot everything you can. Some places tell you to buy their ammo, but some will also say this let you bring your own AS LONG AS IT IS FACTORY. They basically don't want to risk reloads in any of their guns.

Some will also cut you a deal if you want to rent a number of guns so you don't have to pay their "full price" for each one.

Something else I just thought of, spend a little extra to get one with Tritium sights or "night sights". They are awesome in low light conditions!

Forgot to mention the H&K but goof did I see. I love their guns! The full size is huge, the compact is really nice but not really small, more like a sub-compact. Ruger still makes some good guns, I've had a P-85 since they came out. Beretta's are always good too...hell, I like em all!!

Berettas are garbage. I absolutely cannot stand any one of them I've ever shot, and I've shot a lot of them. They feel like crap, shoot like shit, and cost way more than they are worth.

Glock makes some nice pieces, but I'm a big fan of the Springfield xD series, as well as damn near anything S&W. Taurus makes really nice budget handguns as well.

If you have the coin to spend, Kimber and H&K make some really nice pieces as well.

I don't recall everything but extra clip, holster and belt I think was all. I could be wrong. Guess it isn't that much more than other guns.

Just googled some stuff....both in the area of $500 bucks with night sights. What exactly are 'night sights'?

They have Tritium inserts Marko, glow in the dark with no outside light input. Once you use them in low light you'll want them from then on.
