Did you ever watch Gumby as a kid? This is based on the same principle as clay-mation. Film and video is shot at 24-30 frames per second, (in normal mode). So for every second of film, there are 24-30 images recorded.

You set your camera on a tripod, and shoot your scene frame by frame, whilst manipulating the props. And yes, you're right, it's extremely time consuming.

For a home shot video, this is outstanding.
