I think it varies a bunch from state to state.
Some companies will do that; depending upon customer inertia to keep them, while slowly increasing their rates. Unfortunately it works, because most people are too lazy to shop around for cheaper rates. It's the same thing as the old 'slowly increasing the temperature and boiling a frog.'

I pay $285.05 every six months for my Suzuki, Hayabusa ($47.50/mo), for full coverage, comprehensive and collision, with USAA.

Damn, that sounds like Ontario style insurance rates. I'm currently paying around CAN$1100.00 per year for $1M liability and coverage that would likely pay out if I was hit by a falling Russian satellite.

You boys need to quit buying the expensive shit! I pay $160 a year for full coverage on my 2001 Tiger 955i through Progressive. I think it's $75 a year for liability only on my 1998 KLR650.
By the time I'm able to afford a new Vmax, the insurance will probably be reasonable on it too!
Hmmm? I wonder what insurance would be on a new H2!?

Its more about insurers being stupid on what a bike is.

A fine example is the z1000 and ninja 1000. Exactly the same bike and same price basically and the z1000 is has cheaper insurance.

Ninja roughly translates to "dry, no lube" when translated from traditional Japanese to Insurancese.

Up here, several insurance providers use a black list. Typically that black list says things like:

Ducati: all models

Kawasaki: Ninja all models

When I was trying to get insurance for my ER6n, a few years back, my insurer wouldn't cover it because they said they "don't cover sportbikes." They did say that they would keep covering my '00 VFR800, or a new one if I bought the latest version. Hmmmm...... so what is a sportier bike; A Kawi ER, or a Honda VFR?

This same company said that they would also not cover a Ninja 650R, but would cover a Versys 650. Brain. Damaged.
