The interview and reference check for cops should be as thorough as the CIA's, IMO.

Except replace the time spent checking political & terrorist ties, and put it towards checking his emotional control, maturity, communication and leadership skills.

I'm thinking another step that may be beneficial to the public would be to set a higher age limit on becoming a cop, or placing more restrictions on younger cops.

Maybe you can't join the force until you're 28 and can't roll alone until you have a couple years experience. Something to that effect anyway.

Perhaps, but a lot of 22 year olds are more mature than 28 year olds. Thus the need for extensive interviews & reference checks. Maybe some role playing too. And more credit given to leadership experience, extraciricular activities, and public-facing jobs. Not just "yo I got a criminal justice degree and spit some game in my interview"

We're getting a lot of vets on the force. They have leadership experience, maturity, extraciricular activities and many have done public facing jobs (In Iraq and Afghanistan)
I hate to say this but combat vets might not make good police officers.
A lot Iraq and Afghnaistan vets are getting preferential treatment during hiring season and I don't think a lot of em should be there. The atitudes and training are not appropriate for police officer in this country.

I think that if you integrate them slowly and NOT in batches you'll be fine as long as you have good veteran officers who can acclimate them to the job (this ain't Iraq and these aint Iraqis...you gotta take it down a notch and realize these are you neighbors).
If you get a group in and they are being mentored by other combat vets then they just resort to old habits and training.

and take those fucking sunglasses off...

Cops are not normal citizens. They have the authority to detain you, etc. With that authority comes the expectation that they have less rights in other areas, namely privacy while on duty.

Authority + Secrecy = Abuse

I actually think we could turn your phrase around on the cops this time.

Problem being recorded? Don't do anything wrong and you don't have anything to worry about.
