it's still just the flu to me. how is it newsworthy? (don't worry, I'm comfortable with the fact that no amount of media input will convince me that it's any worse than any other flu any other year)

It really isn't newsworthy yet. Everyone has been looking for the next pandemic and the Spanish Flu killed millions. The problem is that we don't really get news anymore, we get whatever the media outlets think will boost rating and, thereby, their ad revenues.

You should look at the statistics for deaths that occur every year during the regular flu season.

We had someone sent home from work this morning because she had a cold.

She didn't have any other symptoms, just sniffly runny nose and maybe watery eyes.....basically a cold.

Dumb. I live in a place that's more than 50% Hispanic, with a good portion of them being illegal...........Don't see any face masks here. Also took a plane last Thursday up to San Fran, didn't see anyone on the plane OR on the subway OR on the street with masks either.

It's not, but we now live in the era of 24 hr. news cycles, and something has to fill the spaces between Viagra and Lipitor commercials.
