When I get to AK, I hope to immediately start looking for a winter mobile. I wouldn't mind a Yoda truck but if I get a decent winter job I might jump on a old turbo diesel. Not because I would really need one, but it would be a dream of mine to whistle around in the snow.

If these people actually had great-paying jobs, along with a house, then maybe such discretionary spending would be justified.......But most of them don't. They're still renting. Or, if they do own a home, they don't have any emergency savings, so if they lose their job they end up in foreclosure very quickly.
They also live at home with mom.

Toyotas are plentiful up there... but tend to cost more for what you get than in the lower 48.
