I've never read the 'Lensmen' stuff, but I've heard a good bit about it, and I've been a JMS fan since Babylon 5.
The style of animation that he brought to the table, in Babylon 5, would work very well for a Lensmen series of movies. He's been shopping it around for a few years. Last thing that I heard was that the first was supposed to be released in spring of 2012, but I haven't heard anything recently. It was originally planned as a trilogy.

Don't go looking for the Manga version of Lensmen, if you want to enjoy this movie. They'll be nothing alike. The Japanese have a way of taking a classic storyline and twisting it beyond all recognition. When they do their own stuff, it's fine.

Star Wars was a western. Lensmen carries many of the same messianic elements as Star Wars. I'm still hoping that someone buys the rights to "Soldier, Ask Not" or "Tactics of Mistake", by Gordon R. Dickson.
