I used to live in an apartment back in FL, and I couldn't figure out why the AC never worked in the summer. Talked to the property manager and they sent one of their techs up to take a look. Same exact thing, the entire unit been taken.
Apparently there's a lot of copper in them. Scrap it out for the copper, take the money and do something with it.
