I knew the basics, my dad taught me how to change my car's oil, change a tire, etc.
Leon taught me how to rip apart a bike and rebuild it. He makes me do my own maint. on my bike. If its something i am not familiar with, he shows me how to do it.

I can totally 100% believe it...
Back in HS I worked at a pizza place... and there was a delivery driver (oddly enough named Marco) who was a tad bit on the queer side. This guy definatly was not mechanically inclined. So one day he came back from a delivery and was saying that his car was smoking bad and smelled funny. So the other drivers checked it out... and then asked him when the last time he changed the oil was? He replyed by saying that he hadn't done it since he bought the car... which I believe had been about 7 months of hard delivery driving. Everybody laughed and said dude change your oil!!! He replied "Oh, you need to do that???" So not knowing a thing about cars... and being too stupid to take it to a shop, he went out and bought some motor oil....... and preceeded to insert the oil....... into the radiator. The car didnt make it very far before the engine overheated, and blew....

Many years ago, when she'd just gotten her license, my wife noticed her car was leaving red spots on the ground, but since she couldn't afford to take it to a shop, she just kept driving... So, one day, naturally, the car wouldn't move. A helpful guy came over and asked her what was wrong, and after a couple of minutes, asked her if she'd checked the transmission fluid lately. What's transmission fluid? It's not like they teach you these things in school, and her father was absolutely no help... However, the big difference was that she wouldn't just go and do service on her car without reading the manual to learn the *proper* way... |
