stemming from this, and since i'll be sucking the unemployment tit come 1 mos from now(unless i get a job before then), in TX its ~$440/wk before tax so about $11/hr pretax. myself, we'll be keeping april at home so we save daycare cost, so $440 + 165 = $605/40= ~$15 (not counting charlie cuz he doesn't goto daycare) but a parent w/ 2 daycare aged kids , they're "income" would be higher.

can anybody honestly say they'd take a lower paying job then what unemployment pays?

before all the ed hate starts, this is the first time i've been unemployed for any length of time since i was 14 y.o. so

Are you being laid off?

If so, that's horrible news. And I don't want to rub any salt in the wounds, but weren't you telling us a while back that your company was expanding at a crazy rate and that this downturn in the economy would help and not hinder you? What happened??

As for the question, you pay into that system to ensure your way of life if you have to go without work.

If you're making more or the same money on the system, you'd be a fool not to take advantage of it. You paid into it for that very reason.

Sorry to hear, Ed. I'll be in line with you soon: http://www.wral.com/business/story/6446521

I'll get ~$500/wk if I draw unemployment, and I won't be applying for any jobs that would pay that little, so I guess I'd fall in the "no" category.

I dunno Ed....I'd work 3 jobs @ $10hr before I'd take a handout, but thats just me..you're still dishing for childcare where mine are all in school...I'd have a different opinion if they were still small and paying $250 a week for childcare.

Very different.

In FL it's capped at $275/wk. which is $25 higher than it used to be.

so lets say you have 3 jobs,you get 20/hrs a week from each, 60hrs @ $10, $600 pretax, 15% tax = $510/wk, unemployment benefits = $500/wk (pretax) in NC.........

i think there's a way to earn some part-time $ to help you stay afloat, but i think it's like $200/wk tops....
