Thumbs down Verizon being stupid

Verizon to Manage Network Speed with Data Throttles for Heavy Users

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
February 3rd, 2011 by Kenneth Butler Fresh on the heels of all those CDMA iPhone 4 reviews, Verizon Wireless is dropping bomb that, starting today, it will manually slow-down the data connections of smart phone users who access the most bandwidth.

According to a PDF memo discovered by Boy Genius Report, only the top 5% of data users are likely to receive a clipped connection. The new measures are designed to “ensure that the remaining 95% of data customers aren’t negatively affected by the inordinate data consumption of just a few users.” ( why not get a clue and offer a better tiering structure? maybe some people MIGHT be willing to pay more, for truly unlimited access? Instead, they put shit like this in small print and hope you don't learn about it )

In addition to grounding some users’ data access, the Verizon memo also reveals the carrier’s plans to adjust its data optimization protocols, a change that will likely affect Verizon subscribers across the board. New techniques for data delivery and rendering include caching less data, storing fewer bits, and “sizing the video more appropriately for the device”. The carrier cautions that while many users may not notice the changes in video rendering quality, “the optimization process may minimally impact the appearance of the file as displayed on your device”. ( yeah "minimally" )
