Military aircraft have a long history of making it home, when they shouldn't be able to fly. In WWII the Lancaster Bombers came back with horrific damage.

A lot of the B-17-s and B-24's got shot up prety bad and still made it back to england.

B-17s made it home because they were pretty rugged
A B-24 would make it home out of sheer luck. Design not so rugged.

a B-26 rarely made it home even without damage.

B-25s went swimming cause the deck was too short

b29 needed to operate at high alts because when the engines quit you needed the glide time to figure out how to get them running again
