Salvage title due to broken plastics????
How in the hell does a bike get a salvage title from having the plastics replaced?
*edit* Same person has an '08 aprilia sl750 with a salvage title because falling over. "Has a salvage title because it fell over on the right side but only has minor damage" Last edited by Rangerscott; 06-26-2009 at 12:04 AM.. |

If the cost of repairing the bike is greater than what the insurance company is willing to pay they sell it for salvage. Then if you deem it worth it to buy the bike back from the insurance company it gets a salvage title.
The salvage title actually has nothing to do with the ability of the bike to be safely operated.

The first one was a gsx-r. Both look brand new. I just cant see how broken plastics could total out a bike.

Yeh very easily. A full set of plastics from a dealership over 1k, add in all the fasteners, a side case, gasket, clipon, mirror, windscreen, turnsignals, brake, add up all these small things and you can easily get close to the magical threshold that insurance companies determine is unworth it for a bike to be repaired.
It also depends on how it went down, if it was backed into by a car then pushed a few feet damage could be huge, a small drop could be just the plastics. I couldnt tell how hard it is to have a salvage title, but in NJ it needs to be inspected after sale at a special inspection station down near Atlantic city to see if it is road worthy.
