Needing something (preferably free) to take the AVI files on my computer and put them on a DVD that can be played in a regular DVD player.

The problem with that is that the .avi files on your computer are only the main feature and has been compressed down to probably 700MB. You would need some sort of dvd creator program to re-create menus and bullshit like that.
