for the gun nuts: Carcano M38

I've got a Italian Carcano M38 in 7.35mm and I'm thinking about bringing it out of storage. I'd like to keep it chambered the way it is, but I'm thinking about getting it re-barreled/rebuilt. I'm talking stuff like adjustable sights/stock/barrel. Is it even feasible to acquire a barrel in 7.35mm? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The official version

Lee Harvey Oswald used a 6.5 x 52 mm Italian Carcano M91/38 bolt-action rifle, serial number C2766. The rifle was equipped with a 4x Hollywood brand scope. The military surplus rifle and scope were sold through Klein's Sporting Goods Company by mail order.



Alternate theories

The Kennedy assassination is one of the most debated events of the 20th century. There are many alternate theories as to the exact circumstances of the assassination.

Some hold that Oswald was not the real shooter, in which case he did not use any rifle.

There is also some controversy as to which exact Carcano rifle was used since there is a 36" and a 40" version and Oswald may have owned both.

Another alternate theory is that the actual rifle found in the book repository was a Mauser, but the Carcano was substituted to frame Oswald.

i read about that after reading this thread, that the original PO said it was a Mauser by mistake since the M38 was based off of the Mauser

the magic bullet theory was a bit of a stretch though

Yes, I own the same type of rifle that was found in the book repository. The only mechanical difference between my rifle and that rifle is that mine uses bigger bullets. Now, mine has been sporterized some time in the past, so I doubt that it's even worth $50. But I'm confident that it's capable "x-ring at 700 meters" given the proper components/ammunition. Anybody know of any good gunsmiths that may be able to help me out here?

I owned a Mauser my Dad brought back from his military days. Nice rifle.

All the ammo that we've got for it is from the '40's, so not exactly stuff that I'm likely to shoot. I might get into reloading if this rifle comes together the way that I hope it does.

I wonder if it can be bored to 8mm. Of course the mechanisms would have to work with the new round.
