Default IT guys..

My roomate left his internet cables when he moved. One of them says, "crosswired" would that have any negative effect on my connection??

If it's a cross over cable, that's used to create a link between 2 computers with no router or switch in between.

Using that cable to connect your computer to a switch or router would not work.

It must be labeled wrong. I hooked up the computer using both, and tried a few online speed/ping tests with both hooked up and there was zero difference.

Most likely it's a crossover cable... used to connect a PC to a PC or a hub to a hub. Hold the ends up together and match the colors of wire across each one. If somewhere in the middle two of the internal wires are flip-flopped, then it's a crossover cable. Connecting from PC to hub, hub to modem, or PC to modem you need straight through cables.

i would think its a crossover cable too, but if it is working like normal than maybe it means something else. strange.

OSP is right. Check the ends. Hold them the same way and compare the wires. If the colors are in exactly the same order, it's a regular cable. If two are switched somewhere along the line, it's a cross over.

I'm betting it's a mis-label if it works normally.

Here's a link to color codes for a normal cable. Both ends should be the same.

Here's a link to a cross over cable.

This is strange, it does seem to be mismatched in it's color sequence.. yet, it still works.

I was just trying to figure out if this was causing my connection problems with my xbox. But, when hooked to the comp, it works fine.. Very weird..

Some routers work with either type of cable.
