Yes you can rip songs and put them on the device. Most of my songs have been ripped from CD's rather than downloaded (although I have a large portion of DL too).

Personally I like ipods the best but if cheap is what you're after....well I don't know the cost of the others.

One thing to consider is the battery. Ipods are so tiny and slim, very easy to use and carry. I used to have one ages ago that required an AAA battery and it was a pain in the butt.

I don't know how much they cost, anyway. Where is the best place to find them? eBay..?
You can go for a Nano, regular, Ipod touch, etc.

I have a Nano and it was a little over a hundred when i got it. Do you have an apple store near you? Or a Best buy?

I have a 2nd-gen iPod I could give you
Battery only lasts a half hour, and it probably weighs 16 ounces

hey triple. i'm right there with you on the phone thing. that's all mine does. anyway i have a 2 gb MP3, works just like an ipod. different brand name. very small has every song i wish to listen to on it and still has tons of room left. was well under a hundred bucks. loaded all the songs from cd, very easy to use. charges on the computer so no real batteries to worry about. a charge lasts all day.

got it at wally world made by Philips. it can store video and all that but i just use it for music.
