My brother lost is laptop on his way to New York. He is thinking of a netbook now. What are the better brands and what features are good to have?

Acer makes a nice one. If he has ATT ( I think) they had a special on a netbook that also used ATT's network for like $100 from Radio Shack...

There are no best features of a Netbook.
The only thing that should standout is that the price is cheaper than a real laptop.

Keep in mind that with some shopping you can get a REAL laptop like a lenovo G530 or generic Dell inspiron in the low 400s.

Otherwise...USB ports and display quality and battery life are bout the only thing to scratch yer balls about when it comes to Netbooks.

We got one of the new tiny Gateway's at Fry's for $250.

I'd go that route over a netbook any day.

I was looking at them, and for not much more, you can get a nice laptop(one of which I am typing on now).

Netbooks are small. that is the only good feature, but it sucks if you want to actually read the screen or type something.

No optical drive, means you can't really do squat as far as an OS is concerned and alot of them have flash memory(small again)

Karl's got it right.

We got one at my office and the key features of this thing are portability and weight. It's tiny and doesn't weigh much. The screen resolution sucks, but that's what you get for a 10.1" display.

If you treat it strickly as an internet appliance, then maybe.

Still, given the choice, I'd rather pony up another $100 and get a real laptop. Does so much more IMO.

Best Netbook, IMO, is the Asus EEE PC 1000 HE series. They run Windows XP great but also have a huge support base for Ubuntu. Good mix of features/performance for the money. We have several users with netbooks and the ones that are happiest with them are the ASUS owners.

Tiny Gateway what? Laptop? Not sure I'd describe any laptop as tiny.

All depends what you want to do with it. Lugging a laptop around all the time sucks, IMO, especially if you are travelling..........So Ima' bout to check me out some netbooks.

mah bad... netbook - I use it when traveling. It's fantastic for what I need it for - with a full copy of office 2007, and 200gb hard drive. And, I have a portable optical drive that I can plug in when needed.

There is no way in hell that would be my only laptop... toooooooo small.

What kind of connection speed does it have, and who's it with?
