Let's not get it fucked up - there are some very tangible benefits as well - GI Bill, TRICARE health insurance, life insurance, death benefits for the families etc. These systems are far from perfect, and certainly you can find better in the civilian market (at least in terms of available health care programs), but you would have to pay a LOT more than we do.

That being said, the intangible benefits (camraderie in particular) is what keeps us from saying fuck this deployment and bureaucracy BS and getting the fuck out of a hazardous-to-your-health-and-your-psyche profession. I think that is something that is missing in the civilian world - the knowledge and complete faith in the guy (or gal) next to you, that even if they don't much like you personally, they would still put their own hide at risk for your sake.

Much like what ACTUALLY HAS saved people in terrorist scenarios, the passengers and crew would be able to subdue assholes who try and pull shit. Obviously, that's easier if the terrorist isn't the only one with a fucking weapon.

I'm talking about passengers, not just the crew. I'm not trying to catch you or anybody else out, I'm just curious. That was in response to your post. The rest of this is just general musings.

Some people on here have already admitted to getting knives through security, and considering "knives" made of material other than metal would be even more difficult to stop, I guess knives are OK. As long as we are trusting people to not get all stabby while flying how big a step is it really to trust those same people to not go all Yosemite Sam with a gun?

That being said, allowing one or both would not negate the need for the TSA or something like it. Anything is possible so I'm sure there are a few people who want to allow explosives on airplanes, but I'm just as sure a large majority do not. Most of that large majority also expects someone to prevent others from bringing their explosives.

What I am getting at is for all the talk of loss of freedoms and people being sheep and drones, where should the line be drawn? Unless someone is advocating for a free-for-all of "bring what you got" on aircraft, what is the acceptable level of intrusion and loss of freedom people can be willing to put up with without being sheep and drones?
