It's a lot better than memorizing eagles, propellers and shit.
Yeh, if you see it every day its super easy, but for someone who doesn't see it every day its confusing as shit.

Not quite.

E-1= no stripes, or slick-sleeve.
E-2= 1 stripe
E-3= 2 stripes, etc.

Just count the stripes and add one, and that's the pay grade. It's really the easiest of all the branches.

maybe they've changed it since I was in. Either that, or my memory is fading in my old age.

It's changed a couple of times, but that's the current iteration. It's nice because it's incredibly simple.

If you have time to stare at the rank. I found it one of the more difficult to distinguish on the fly, especially the difference between E-4's and E-5's, E-5's and E-6's. Don't even get me started on being a Marine and trying to address a senior enlisted Air Force member by rank...

"Yes, Chief Master Senior Air Sergeant First-Class with a Cherry on Top. No, Senior Master Awesome Good-Job Sergeant Major Air Assault"

Of course, the absolute hardest to pick out on a walk-by are Navy Chiefs in khakis. You damn-near need a pair of binos to count the stars right.

Things like this didn't present a problem for an officer. Officers had a tried and
tested way of solving problems like this. It was called a sergeant.

Congrats... I got fucked by doing a special duty... In my normal career field, I'd have made it by 5pts... missed it as an MTL by 14pts... oh well...
