At least your iphone 4, then you get to use Apple Maps and free turn by turn. Your iPad isn't really worth it cause you only really get Siri and Apple Maps with iOS6 and you don't get Siri on the ipad 2.

I will look into it - do I have to jailbreak the iPhone?

My iPad is the wifi version only so neither would do much good on there - not a lot of wifi hotspots near my house to get my position anyway

No you pay like $7 a year to get put on someone's developer account and get access to beta release iOS
