I can't verify, but I know that my grandfather (who normally kills most snakes he encounters) expressed regret when he accidentally killed a kingsnake with the lawnmower. Apparently it had been living on our property for a while and he was happy to have it there.

All Kingsnakes will eat other snakes, poisonous or not. North American kingsnakes are immune to the venom of North American poisonous snakes (rattlers, cottonmouths, copperheads, even corals) but not neccesarily poisonous snakes from other places. They are very good to have around to keep down the populations of other snakes and rodents and they can get pretty big. I saw one in Osceola National forest about 6-7 ft long laying in the road and when it saw me it literally launched itself from the edge of the road and cleared about a 12 ft wide ditch to land and disappear into the woods.

See, that's what I had always heard and why I can't subscribe to the "ALL SNAKES MUST DIE!!!" mentality.
I figure a snake that helps police its own deserves my respect.

Tommy, I am surprised you aren't at the Bronx Zoo trying to steal the missing Egyptian Cobra.

I absolutely do!
And yeah, places that don't have at least a moderate snake population have issues with rats and other vermin.

I don't believe we have many snakes in michigan and we don't hv a big rat issue. Maybe in detroit they hv a mild rat issue (mild compared to like ny).
