For some reason there's this one Shell station in a shitty area that wants 4.19 for regular. The station right across the street, Valero, is 3.95.

Saw a few stations at 4.03 and 4.05 as well.

Shit sucks!

So why is there such a big discrepancy in price (in general)? We just hit $3.65 and I think we are around the nat'l avg. Some of you guys are already at $4 gal?

state taxes play into it to a degree. NJ has cheaper gas than NY but ct has higher prices.

In ny its actualy more in NYC, which I find weird since taxes are worse out here in the burbs, but it seems like us and prtcl are paying similar prices and we live quite far apart. Dubbs and I are on the same sandbar so th eprices seem to be rather consistant throughout the island.

Because they know which metro areas have higher-income people, and they charge accordingly.

Go to Colorado, and compare the gas in downtown Denver, to the ones in Vail or Aspen. It's always like a full dollar difference. Why? Because they know people up there have money, and have no other choice.

Go to a gas station right off the freeway or right next to the airport, and they'll charge at least 25 cents more than the other stations in your city. You pay for convenience.

Go to Colorado, and compare the gas in downtown Denver, to Vail or Aspen. It's always like a full dollar difference. Why? Because they know people up there are trapped, and will pay it.

Go to California, and compare the state average to the state average in a non-coastal state like Mississippi or Indiana. It's higher because they know people in CA have higher average salaries.
Or it's because businesses in urban core areas have to pay significantly higher rent/mortgage/property tax, so they have to increase prices to cover it.
