I had bought a domain by 1998 because the internet providers kept getting bought and I was tired of my email changing

Started with Mindspring and ran thru about 4 providers (never A O hell) till TW cable came thru

My dad has been paying $10 a month for the past decade, and $25 a month for the decade before that. Here is the kicker, he's had broadband through cable company since somewhere around 2000 so he hasn't had to pay for it since then. The only reason he pays that money is that he doesnt want to loose his email address.
LOL, same with my parents, they use something called provide.net

What's the typical rule about email with these companies? Do you instantly lose your email addy after you cancel your service? Or will they auto-forward your email to another address for a certain period of time?

I dont think there is a rule

Anyone remember the days when you can enter a search term into (in pre google days) a search engine and come back with no results?

Friends in the education world hooked me up with Toronto Free Net in 1991. It was a text-only portal to the Internet, run by the universities in Toronto, and accessible via modem. There was no graphic interface, so web pages were only usable in hypertext, but the web wasn't big then anyway. For motorcycle information you went to newsgroups, like rec.motorcycles.

... if you could sift pat the flame wars.
