The Coldplay melody begins on the "and" of the 5th quarter note (someone correct me, if I've counted this wrong, I can't read flyshit).
Satch's begins on 1. They are offset, for proper "registration" in the video example given. This may factor into the court's decision. Also, I believe you have to lift 8 bars, total, for it to be considered a steal. The trailing end of both melodies in the eight bar figure do diverge slightly.

Hey, if Vanilla Ice stole from Bowie then this steals from Joe. Coldplay should be penalized by being forced to listen to Motley Crue records until they kill themselves. Or Motley Crue, either way the world wins.

I heard both songs one after the other.... it's the same shit
They basically ripped of the guitar melody and and turned into the vocal melody with lyrics... |

It was queen and the record co. paid them. They played the odds of the record not selling. When it did and queen's lawyers came calling an agreement was made.

Sorry it was Queen, WITH David Bowie singing as guest vocalist with Freddy Mercury. Thanks for the correction. And Coldplay's record is apparently selling in defiance of all good taste, so pay up. British fags.

News Bulletin
Most samples are not cleared. The most used sample EVER is James Brown's "Funky Drummer", and James never sued anyone, to my knowledge...may the Godfather RIP.
Usually, an agreement is made, if anyone beefs. If not, it's settled in court. They bank on the fact that very few actually beef hard enough to make it a legal matter, should it even be noticed or pursued at all. As for whether this is a steal or not, it depends on how the case is argued, and who is on the jury, or what judge adjudicates the matter. There are only 11 notes. Nothing is new in music. A lot of things are inadvertently copied. Most musicians will tell you that any musician/songwriter is just a sum of their influences. The degree to which these manifest can be subtle, or obvious. Picasso once said "Good artists copy, great artists steal". Personally, in this instance, I think this is not only inadvertent, it's entirely coincidental. Coldplay still blows, however, IMHO...but that's a matter of taste. I personally think this particular Satch tune kinda sucks too, but maybe it's just because it sounds like Coldplay. YMMV
