I think a .410 is a good start for a youth gun. If you go with an over and under your going to get a little more kick then you would if you had a semi-auto. But even at that a .410 won't give you even that much. I shoot sporting clays so I have a Browning Citori 626 Sporting Clays with a 30" barrel or I have a Remington 11-87 premier 12 ga with a 28" barrel. I've also got a Remington 1100 12 ga with a 26" barrel.
I've thought about getting a .410 in over and under just to hone the skills. A 20 ga is a good one to go with, but it's got some ass behind it. If your shooting a lot, you'll start to feel it afterwards. A typical sporting clays course is either 50 or 100 rounds. I don't know the age, but 50-100 rounds with a 20 ga, I think they'd begin to be sore. ![]() ![]() My brother has a Mossberg .410 with a pistol grip.

.410 is good along with being interchangable with some guns in a .45 colt. The only thing about .410 is cost, which might be a tad more than others.

Nothing wrong with a 20ga for him.
A Remington 1100 Lite 20ga was my first shotgun and I was probably around Blake's age, maybe younger, when Dad got it for me. I have nothing against .410's, I've just never owned one myself. ![]()

If you don't mind a pump gun, you can get a Remington 870 youth/ladies model pump shotgun in a 20 ga, for about $260 - $300. I just saw it in a ad for Dicks Sporting Goods.

Depending on his size, go full length on the shotgun so no need to out grow it.

I got a Remington 870 Express youth model in 20ga when I was 12. The gun is a tank and now sits next to my bed. I love that gun still.

Let me guess...
Ed thinks Blake should get a .22 loaded with Snake Shot, and practice on Tater-Tots. JC
