From the original study, it sounds like researchers can crystallize the protein, so they at least know what the crystal structure looks like. They just don't know what individual protein structure it would take to get that crystal structure.

The gamers apparently came up with a few different protein structures that would crystallize up in the same way as the real one.

But I ain't a biochemist, so take all that with a crystal of salt.
