You're seeing it in the wrong light. It isn't about trees, it's about football, and it's a coin toss whether the dominant religion in the US South is Christianity, of football. He didn't (allegedly) kill trees. He showed disrespect to their god.

They already hate anything orange and white that goes by UT because of Tennessee.
