As a superior wouldn't you rather field "Where's the bathroom?", "When do I get my gun?", or "How many times can I tase a dirtbag?" over "Isn't this ridiculous focus on writing tickets all about revenue generation instead of crime prevention?", "Can we stop playing with how we classify crimes so we end up with accurate statistics?", or "Why don't we focus on violent crimes instead of petty crap?"

Perhaps if they had hired smart people a long time ago, they'd have smart leaders who wouldn't be threatened by smart subordinates

I think the truly smart people are smart enough not to become cops. The guy in the article went to college and got a literature degree so he cant be all that smart.

Some people, with something more than merely average intelligence, actually see the benefits of public service. And I do mean service, not control.

Normally I'd agree......... but if you're getting a full ride to an Ivy League school and will get interviews just because of the school you go to, why not major in something you enjoy?

Not to mention that such people will undoubtedly go on to grad school or law school anyway.

Maybe Im biased but in my experience the police officers who are there to serve the public and not their own egos are rare.

Necessity if you're not attending a top school.....

But if it IS a top school, you can easily get a good-paying Fortune 500 job even if your major is totally unrelated to the job. Case example: You can easily get a job as an assistant brand manager at a place like Proctor & Gamble, or get into account management at an ad agency, even though you didn't major in business. You just need to go to the "right" school, and have the "right" resume and the "right" extraciricular activities.

I never submitted IQ test results when I applied at my local police department some years ago, but I did ace every exam they threw at me (as would anyone else with a 3rd grade or higher education).

Young, fit, passed their tests with flying colors = denied.
