My old IBM ThinkPad X30 is still ticking flawlessly after almost 5 years. The real "trick" to long laptop use is to:

a) Not Drop it regularly
b) Get the best (i.e. best physical damage protection) laptop bag/case money can buy
c) Not spill liquids into it
d) ALL OF THE ABOVE

Just in case you weren't paying attention - the correct answer is D...

If you have random pockets of locally heavy gravity in your vicinity, get one of the 'hardened'/MilSpec laptops from Panasonic, et. al. YMMV...

Those ToughBooks are pretty damn nice...

Anyways, back to Dell.

I can't complian, they do their job and honestly if I had to choose between HP basic tech support and Dell basic tech support, I'd choose Dell.

Dell's are good for general use systems.....

But on servers and what not (i know this was about laptops) I'd go HP all-day-long.

I, and 5 other guys, ARE Dell tech support on campus. All repairs to these models are done in-house. I'm a certified tech for Latitude, Optiplex, and Precision systems. Since going to Dell we've had far fewer problems.

The Latitude and Precision notebooks take a fair bit more abuse than do the Inspirons. Odd, since most home users are far more abusive of equipment than are corporate users, in my experience.

I do know that Sony Vaio's don't like coffee in the keyboard.

Now I have a Compaq. and coffee is not anywhere near this one
