Forumites at Camaro5 have been collectively scratching their heads for a couple days, wondering why there appear to be two layers of lead wheel weights stuck onto their brake calipers. It's a mystery Charlie Brown!

The confusion started when a poster uploaded an image of his new Camaro's Brembo calipers, on which were riding two rows of lead weights, normally affixed to the inside of a wheel rim to balance the tire. This led everyone with a Camaro to run outside to see it their mullet machine's also had the weights, which they do, at least on among the folks on the forum. GM has not answered to the confusion yet, but the leading theory is they were place on the caliper as a quick and dirty fix to alleviate brake squeal. From a physics perspective, this explanation is plausible, as resonant frequency is in large part determined by mass, and by changing the vibrating mass of the caliper with the weights, a troublesome squeal would be eliminated for a particular driving condition.

The trouble is if they're using normal brake weights, the heat cycling of the caliper will eventually cause the adhesive to fail and, if things get too serious on the track, the lead could actually melt. Though it's an odd issue and not really a big deal, we'll be keeping you in on the loop during Camaro brake-gate, though we recommend Camaro owners visit their local dealer and have their muffler bearings, blinker fluid, and piston-return springs checked out, just in case.

sounds like a planned recall to me (ie a short term solution to get the cars out there with a solution pending) in order to meet the production deadline

Outstanding... the companies, or at least who ever authorized this, is a standup person...

but sorry... they still make infierior products IMO.... I can appreciate that they care about this country in a crisis... but if they'd just build their vehicles so that they could keep up with Toyota and Honda in reliablility and cost of ownership... (I said reliablility... not WARRENTY) I'd be more willing to buy...

the fact is... American vehicles have been shitty so long by comparrison... that it'll take 10 years of outstanding reliablility before I'm willing to put my hard earned money at risk with one.

Beat me to it. Most of my toys are American-not because they are made in America, but because they are what I wanted at the time.

99 3/4 ton Silverado-If Toyota made a 3/4 ton truck I would have bought that.
08 Vette-Best production (no modifications)sports car for the money.
07 Yami VStar-Wanted a cheap cruiser to find out if that is really what I wanted in a MC
09 HD- Didn't want a WC cruiser-so HD fit the bill.

In the last few years I've seen more problems/issues with new Honda's and Toyotas than Ford/GM vehicles.

I agree, American car companies have come a long ways since the 80's which basically killed any rep they had.

Don't you work in the AirForce? Hard? lol

jk jk

Seriously you need to own a 2005 or higher GM/Ford or Chysler. They are very well built today vs. the 1980s and 1990s.
