Love the gap hate the chaos! It used to be a great place but it got way to crowded with to many people doing stupid shit. That's the great thing about being a local, we know roads that are just as fun that the tourist don't know about. Haven't been back to the gap in over a year and don't really miss it.

I my experiance the best place to pass a car on that road is just before and in the middle of the corner....If you know what you are doing and checked for oncomming traffic at the right time. If you can't see around the turn, ie: through the trees up there, then don't do it. Large vehicles on the gap are best left for the short straight sections.
That guy just didn't know how to ride and dumbassed into the weeds and down the hill for no good reason. How do I know? Been there-Done that.
I have a picture of the "tree of Shame"(before it had a name) with one part hanging on it.. my front wheel, 16 years ago.

that video is really a classic of what not to do's... passing on a blind curve, failure to press and lean the motorcycle, target fixation, failure to apply the brakes correctly.

What was amazing is that the 2nd rider managed to hold it together just enough not to end up on top of him in the ditch. He almost did, but managed to keep it on the shoulder.

Unfortunately, I believe we've all been there before. I believe this rider is either a perpetual cruiser from KS or FL who got in over his head in the mountains or is a newer rider. I don't know if he'd ever attended an MSF course or other rider training, but I think it would have made all the difference if he had or had remembered what he was taught.

Hopefully, he made it through with minor injuries and light damage. I have been down with minor injuries and light damage. Most have. For me, it was a learning experience. I spent weeks deconstructing what happened and what I needed to do to keep it from happening again. I think it made me a better rider and a better student of riding.

There is nothing like getting pitched on your ass to provide you with a healthy dose of respect for riding.
