Tigger and Trip are right. I've been married six years, and a relationship is not equal. I bight my tongue about a lot of shit, whereas Ulu vents about everything. I pay all the bills except for her truck, and everything is in my name. She does all the housework except my laundry, I do the yard work. She does 90% of the kid-raising, I'm the one who beats him. Is our life equal? Fuck no, not even close? Do we both do our part so it evens out? No, hell no. I'm doing way more shit. Ask her and she'll tell you she does more. And yes we keep score, everybody does. The day I lose the moral high ground I have to start helping more, which is how we avoid fights, because I can tell when she's getting pissed and do an assessment, then up my workload for a while or contribute more in some other way (hence me sucking it up and coming to North Dakota, I'm fucking MILES ahead on the leaderboard after this little jaunt.) Relationships are all about doing shitty things you wouldn't have to if you were single. The goal is to do just enough shitty things, or the right shitty things, to make the other person happy they don't have to do those shitty things so they'll do something that makes you happy in return, which usually ends up being shitty for them. Your relationship works in the long term when you find a good balance of shitty things that make each other happy and you can stand. And eventually those things become a little less repugnant through familiarity, and that's what love is people. Overcoming a basic, inherent loathing through repetition generating a general numbness. Merry fucking Christmas.
