Press in on the right stick when aiming. I never used it either, until I realized I could shoot just about everybody on screen in the head without missing a shot almost every time.

Works excellent for clearing hideouts, or killing a large posse in about 10 seconds. Also is really cool to put 15 shots in somebody's face with the Mauser pistol rather quickly.

Final boss dude thing died with many bullets to the face. Was a sight to see.

Edit.. I read some shit about using bait to kill bears and using a hostage from town. Bear goes after hostage and you get to knife him down. At least that's how it's supposed to work out. Those things and cougars always pissed me off. I often played before going to sleep and it never failed to startle me awake when they leap from behind the screen.

I just ended up using the pump shotgun once to the face of the bear, and finished him off with the knife. Quick and easy - the bear tries to run away, so you just run up behind him slashing away.

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. My dead eye only works on multiple humans, I can't get it to work on multiple animals. Can't move forward on hunter challenges.

I noticed dead eye doesn't work when using a scoped weapon either. The screen changes, and I hear the noise. But I just can't place an X anywhere.

I was using a pistol. I would go into dead eye and then it would kick me out as soon as I tried to target.

Was your dead eye meter empty? That is the only thing I could think of. Never had it happen with a pistol, personally.
