is my battery charger cooked?
just got a new battery, filled the acid, hooked it up to the battery charger i have had for about 5 years, not used since it was new.
i saw nothing happen at all. i let it charge for 2-3 hours and nothing. maybe there was a slight ticking noise coming from the positive connection. what am i doing wrong? or is this thing broken, i heard they can be sensitive.

how many amps is the charger?
It usually takes my 2A charger a long time( 5+ hours to fully charge a battery)

the charger has two switches on it,
one for manual / semi auto / full auto (maintenance free) and the other is for 6v / 12v i have it set to maintenance free and 12v

"maintenance free" sounds like a 1 or 2 amp trickle charge to me. Do you know what the amp output is in the manual or semi-auto modes? If you're charging a fully dead battery at 1-2 amps, It's going to take forever, and you may not get a very deep charge. Not the best way to do it. JC

If you don't have one, get a $10 digital volt/meter from Sears. Set it to volts and check across the battery. Should read around 12 volts. Then hook up the charger. It should read around 13 and climbing.
If it's not charging the battery, put the clamps to the volt/meter. Should read around 12 volts. If nothing, something is disconnected in the charger. Unplug it and check the wires and clamps for resistance with the volt/meter. Then take it apart and check for a fuse. There's no moving parts so something probably came unsoldered or unclamped. |
