How important are political views in a significant other?
Had an interesting conversation with a male friend. He told me I'd be dateable to him but I'm too much of a "lefty" in his opinion.
Just made me curious. I've never considered political views when evaluating a partner. I probably gravitate to those closer in line to my own views. But then I've seen some real opposites get together. So how important are they to you? Do you have similar views with your SO? Do you care? Are there certain "big" items you need to have in line and the rest is inconsequential? |

Z and i have similar views
and it would be somewhat important, i'd hate to spend time arguing politics w/ my mate cuz it's a no win sit.

I don't talk about politics with her. Nor do I talk about religion with her.

I've dated mostly people with differing political views just because it made for interesting conversations and we "took it out" on each other.
I ended up marrying a very apolitical person though.

Personally, I rarely talk political or religious views with people. I don't hide them, but they rarely come up in conversation with me and I don't make it a point of bringing them up.
Just thought it was funny that my friend said I was too much of a lefty considering I don't ever talk about that stuff with him. He's so right it's not even funny....and I know that so don't see the point in discussing it with him. It's also something I've never considered in potential dates. |

My current girlfriend and I differ quite a bit, but fortunately it doesn't seem to be much of an issue.
We found common ground on the love of guns, so she's my kind of liberal

Spiritual and political views are the top 2 (for me)
But I've known catholics who've married jews and lefties married to righties. Look at Arnold and Maria Just depends on where it stands in importance I guess.

To me I guess it really depends on how stong their beliefs are. We don't have to agree on everything or have the same upbringing but if they believe like some on this forum when it comes to political views and voice their opinion at every chance they get...again like some on this forum and refuse to have an open mind about it then no...it would not work.
